The short version

Your child's photo is used for one thing: to create the illustrated character that appears in their book. We delete the photo as soon as that character has been made, and an automatic clean-up removes it within 24 hours in every case.
What we keep is the illustrated character and the book pages made from it, so we can make your book, reprint it if anything goes wrong, and keep your ebook available. You can ask us to delete them at any time.
Who helps us: a small number of service providers who host our site, make the illustrations and narration, send our emails, take payment, and print and ship your book. They may only use your information to provide those services to us.
We never sell your personal information for money. You can opt out of ad tracking with the "Your privacy choices" link at the bottom of every page.

Who we are

Magikast (magikast.com) is a trading name of Baby Design Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. Our address is 378 Mare Street, London, E8 1HR, United Kingdom. We sell personalized children's books to customers in the United States. In this policy, "we" and "us" means Magikast.

Our website is for adults: parents, family members and anyone buying a book as a gift.

What we collect

Information you give us

Your contact details: your email address, and at checkout your name, shipping and billing address and, if you give it, your phone number.
Your order: what you bought, what you paid, and your order history.
Your marketing choice: whether you left the email box ticked, with the date and the exact wording you saw.
Messages you send us.

Information about your child, which you give us

Their first name, and whether the book should be for a boy or a girl.
One photo of them.
The dedication message, if you write one.

Information collected automatically

Device and usage information, such as your browser, the pages you visit and how you got to our site, collected through cookies and similar technology by us, Shopify, and our advertising and analytics partners (see "Cookies and advertising" below).
A security check on the photo upload page (Cloudflare Turnstile) that looks at signals from your browser to tell people from automated programs.

Payment card details are handled by Shopify's payment processing. We never see or store your full card number.

How we use your child's photo

We take children's information seriously, so here is exactly what happens.

When you upload a photo, it is held in a private, access-controlled store.
It is sent to Google Cloud's Vertex AI service, which creates an illustrated character of your child in the style of the book you chose. Under Google Cloud's terms, Google does not use this data to train its AI models.
As soon as the character exists, we delete the photo. If that deletion ever fails, an automatic clean-up removes it within 24 hours.

Everything after that is made from the illustrated character, not from the photo. The pages of your preview and your book are created by placing the character into our illustrators' artwork using OpenAI's image models through OpenAI's API, which does not use API data to train its models by default. If your book or audiobook is read aloud, your child's first name and the story text are sent to ElevenLabs to create the narration.

We do not use the photo or the character to recognize or identify anyone, and we do not use them for anything other than making and supporting your order.

How we use your information

To make and deliver your order: creating your preview and book, printing, shipping, your ebook and audiobook, and order emails such as confirmations and tracking.
To send your preview: when you enter your email to see your preview, we email you a link to it.
Marketing emails: if you leave the box ticked, we may send you a few reminders about your child's book, plus news about new stories and offers. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing stops them. Untick the box and we'll only email you about your preview and your orders.
Customer support: answering your questions and fixing problems with orders.
Security: preventing fraud and abuse, including automated misuse of our photo upload.
Improving our site and advertising: understanding how people use our site and measuring our ads.
Legal obligations: keeping records for tax and accounting.

Who we share information with

We share information only with service providers who help us run Magikast, and only what each one needs:

Shopify: our store, checkout, payments and customer accounts.
Google Cloud (Vertex AI): creating your child's illustrated character from the photo.
OpenAI: placing the character into the book's illustrations.
ElevenLabs: narration, using your child's first name and the story text.
Amazon Web Services: sending our emails and storing ebook files.
Vercel, Railway, Trigger.dev and our database host: hosting our website, our systems and the images we make.
Cloudflare: the security check on the upload page.
Prodigi and its print partners: printing and shipping, using the recipient's name, shipping address, the contact details needed for delivery, and the print files.
Judge.me: asking for a review after your order arrives.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google: advertising and analytics (see below).

We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect our rights or the safety of others, or as part of a sale or reorganization of our business, in which case this policy continues to apply.

Cookies and advertising

We and our partners use cookies, pixels and similar technology to run the store (for example, to keep your cart), to understand how the site is used, and to show and measure ads on other sites and apps, including Meta and Google. Under some US state laws, using information this way for targeted advertising can count as "selling" or "sharing" personal information.

You can opt out at any time with the "Your privacy choices" link at the bottom of every page. We also honor Global Privacy Control signals sent by your browser as an opt-out. You can block cookies in your browser settings too, although parts of the store may then stop working.

We do not sell personal information for money, and we do not use your child's photo, character or name for advertising.

Children

Our site is for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. Information about a child comes from the parent or adult making the book. If you believe a child has given us information directly, email us and we will delete it.

How long we keep information

Your child's photo: deleted as soon as the character is made, and within 24 hours in every case.
The illustrated character, preview and book pages: kept so we can make your book, reprint it if needed and keep your ebook available, until you ask us to delete them.
Order records: kept as long as tax and accounting law requires.
Marketing: we stop marketing emails as soon as you unsubscribe, and keep a record of the unsubscribe so it stays respected.

Your choices and rights

You can ask us to:

tell you what personal information we hold about you or your child, and give you a copy;
correct it;
delete it, including your child's character and book pages;
stop marketing emails (or use the unsubscribe link in any marketing email);
stop "selling" or "sharing" for targeted advertising (or use the "Your privacy choices" link).

Email hello@magikast.com. We may need to confirm it's you before acting on a request. We will not treat you differently for using these rights. If we turn down a request, we'll tell you why, and where your state's law gives you a right to appeal, you can do so by replying to our answer.

Security

Information is sent over encrypted connections. Your child's photo and the images we make are kept in private storage that is not publicly listed, and access to our systems is restricted. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will tell you if a breach affects you where the law requires.

Where information is processed

We are based in the United Kingdom and our service providers operate in the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union, so your information may be processed in any of those places.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this page when our practices change and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll tell you by email or on the site.
